Cancer Support Network @ First

Listening, Resources, Meals, Transportation, Caring...

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer is an overwhelming experience for both cancer victims and their family members. The Cancer Support Network (CSN) at the First United Methodist church utilizes resources from cancer survivors, their family members, and other members who want to be involved in the network. The CSN also utilizes resources of the Stephens Ministry and the Meal Ministry.

The Cancer Support Network offers support by:

  1. Providing well-established resources and information
  2. Furnishing meals during week(s) of surgery and during difficult periods of time
  3. Arranging needed transportation to hospital or doctor visits
  4. Being good listeners and sharing experiences and suggestions

Searching for Answers:

One of the things that cancer survivors at the First United Methodist Church agree upon is that a patient must be their own best advocate, with their family and friends as supporters. Gathering information about all aspects of cancer can be done in various ways, including searching the web. There you can also find resources for ordering pamphlets, books and videos. Below are listed some sites that may assist in your search for answers. Click on the name to go to the site.

Encore Plus Program, YWCA (Breast Cancer Support), 432-5581. ENCORE is a hallmark community service program that has been offered by the YWCA of Green Bay-De Pere since 1994.  It provides a unique combination of physical and emotional support during diagnosis and recovery from breast cancer.  In addition to a   twice-monthly support group, which features speakers on a variety of cancer-related topics, the ENCORE program focuses on water exercise. The water exercise classes, designed by a cancer exercise specialist, are offered in the YWCA’s 88° pool.  The emphasis is on gentle movements that help improve range of motion, increase mobility, and alleviate stress. The YWCA ENCORE Support Group is offered free of charge to the public.  ENCORE Water Fit classes are free of charge for new members for the first two years.  Both are offered at the YWCA, 230 S. Madison Street , in downtown Green Bay. For more information, please contact YWCA ENCORE Program Coordinator, Gail Brady, at 432-5581, ext. 143.
